ETHICALLY RAISED CHICKENS
We know, it’s a big claim! So what do we mean when we say our birds
are ethically raised? We think that a chicken should be allowed to behave like a chicken and do all the things that chickens like to do, so
the environment we provide is as close to that of a backyard chook as we believe a commercial operation can get. We provide them with an indoor space to roost at night and provide shade in hot weather, with
all the food and drink that they need. They have free access to the outdoors so that they can socialise, stretch, flap their wings and
forage for pasture, worms, grubs and insects.

ONLY 1500 HENS PER HECTARE
2
The regulations say that 10,000 chickens per ha is free range, but we don’t think that is good enough. We work to the CSIRO standard of 1500 chickens per ha. When you combine this lower stocking rate with a pasture rotation you end up with better outcomes for the chickens and better outcomes for the land.
CHICKENS ROTATED ON PASTURE
3
It doesn’t matter how low your stocking rate is, if you don’t move your sheds you are going to end up with problems. Chickens like to scratch and dust bathe, and this would eventually lead to loss of pasture around the shed. You also get a build up of chicken manure under and around the shed, which can lead to nitrogen run-off into waterways. We aim to move our sheds twice a week (although sometimes Tasmania’s wet, winter weather has other ideas). By moving the sheds our chickens are never in the one spot for long enough to damage the pasture and we spread the chicken manure over large areas of the farm, putting all that nutrient into growing grass rather than into waterways.
SHOP LOCAL AND SUPPORT TASMANIANS

Most people don’t realise that if you walk into a major supermarket in Tasmania, roughly half the eggs on the shelf are coming across the water from the mainland. We are a Tasmanian family-owned business. We live and work here. When you buy our eggs the money stays in Tasmania.

PASTURE RAISED EGGS:
This is a type of free range production that emphasises lower stocking densities and rotational grazing so there is always ground cover and grazeable plant species for the hens.
